Nakasendo highway had 69 stations between Nishonbashi in Edo and Sanjo Ohashi in Kyoto a distance of about 532km.
Nakatsugawa station is the 45th post town from Nihonbashi in Edo and well preserved the old post station atmosphere.

This sign post explains that Kogoro Katsura also known as Kido Takayoshi (1833-1877), a veteran statesman of Imperial Restoration of Meiji, is well known to have played a vital role as an advocator of overthrowing the Shogunate, stayed here in June 1862.
“Christian Stone Lantern”’ or also called the Oribe Toro since the image seems to be that of the Virgin Mary engraved on the pole of the lantern, and the speculation that Furuta Oribe was a Christian.
